Power bulge and torque reserve pull through the tough spots

Power bulge and torque curve Power bulge and torque curve
Overview

When the tractor is under load, power bulge and torque rise work together to get through the tough spots without having to   downshift.

As rpm drops, the only way to maintain or increase horsepower is to provide additional torque. Whether bailing wet hay or lifting a heavy load, the additional power allows the tractor to continue performing the job without stopping. The rated economy power take-off (EPTO) speed occurs near the peak torque rise providing power when you need it in PTO applications.

Benefits
  • Increased productivity in demanding conditions with more power when you need it
  • More lugging ability for quicker power recovery
  • Additional torque provides force to remain horsepower as engine rpm drops below rated speed
Additional Details

Horsepower and torque are mathematically related.

Cooling package design and serviceability

Every utility tractor producer wants to maximize uptime and appreciates enhanced performance. The cooling package on the Final Tier 4 (FT4) 4-cylinder 5E Tractors allows for easier access to and serviceability of certain critical components. This improvement to serviceability will save time and also enhance tractor performance.

The cooling package features a first-pass screen to catch larger debris, a slide-out condenser (only on cab tractors) a charge air cooler that tilts forward, and a hydraulic oil cooler that slides out halfway to both sides of the tractor.

First pass screen First pass screen
Slide out condenser on cabs Slide out condenser on cabs
Charge air cooler tilted forward Charge air cooler tilted forward

The engine is equipped with an electronically controlled fan drive, which means that it only runs as fast as the needs of the tractor demand at that time. This is a fuel-saving device which improves hydraulic cooling and reduces the noise level for the operator. It also positively impacts total fluid efficiency.

Several defining features on 5 Series tractors maximize the performance and reliability of the emissions package. A completely shielded DOC/SCR not only protects essential components from damage but it also keeps out dirt and debris. The well-packaged and tightly organized circulation system means there is more room to work around the tractor.

Key components of the emissions system

Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)

Deere has chosen to utilize an exhaust filter (DOC) to reduce particulate material so the engine can operate at a level which produces less nitrogen oxide (NOx). With less NOx created, it requires less DEF to treat. The result is improved total fluid economy (diesel and DEF).

The engine is programmed to aggressively respond to changes in power needs, which can temporarily increase particulate matter. Since the exhaust filter removes particulate matter instead of the engine, the engine is left free to do what it is designed to do – deliver all of the power, torque, plus transient response needed at the exact moment needed.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)

DEF is an ISO 22241 standard aqueous urea solution consisting of 32.5 percent urea and has a freezing point of -11° C (12° F). A DEF tank keeps the operator in the field longer even when the temperatures drop below freezing. The DEF tank header is integrated with a temperature sensor and plumbed engine coolant lines are used to promote thawing and prevent freezing in the tank during operation.

DEF tank DEF tank

Mounted near the DEF tank, the engine control unit (ECU)-controlled supply module draws DEF from the storage tank and provides a pressurized flow to the dosing module. When the ignition key is off, the supply module pump will reverse direction to return any accumulated fluid back to the tank. The supply module is also fitted with a replaceable filter to prevent contaminants from entering the dosing lines. Both the supply module and dosing lines are electrically heated and controlled by the ECU to determine when diesel exhaust fluid dosing can begin.

Can't mow tall grass

1/5

I bought this three months ago to mow down some sumac. The wire to the MFWD keeps getting knocked loose. I brought this to the attention of the company I bought it. Their techs say it is a known problem, there is no fix and their recommendation is to not mow grass taller than the bottom of the tractor.

Great tractor have no regrets at all, John Deere was awesome about purchasing finance , our farm is lucky to have such a a great machine, 2019 had some good changes to it with better front view also the controls were set up better for all day use. The 520m loader works great for me I added a tooth bar and there's plenty of power

Cattle farm operation

5/5

I purchase my 5100E new in 2014, we operate a cattle operation in Va. it used to cut, rake and bale hay and un-roll bales during the winter. Also used for snow removal, bush hogging and other general items on the farm. This tractor works great for everyone we do, with our operation getting bigger, we just purchase a new 6120M for bigger equipment we are purchasing, but have decide to keep our 5100E as it has been maint free.

Good tractor for the money

5/5

I use my 5100E to pull 15ft rotary cutter. I ordered 3SCV's, wouldn't have one without it. I also had duals put on for hillside mowing. This tractor is great. I use to mow with my 6140R, the 5100 is much better suited. Also great tractor for snow removal. I find it being my tractor of choice. The cab is quiet, cool in summer, warm in winter. I did also get the right door kit. I recommend.

great machine, will keep buying deere from now on

5/5

I use this machine for roadside grass cutting commercially and commercial snowplowing and blowing in Canada average 500hrs to 800 hrs per year as of right now , I have had no serious issues with it, had a loose wire which would not let it start once but john deere fixed that on site same day, love the power reverser and the wet clutch my last tractor(not john deere) blew a clutch yearly due to it being a dry clutch doing the kind of work I do, its great on fuel with the 540 e option when doing roadside grass cutting saved 25% on fuel from the previous year using other tractor doing same job same milage same hours, my tractor has the cab with air ride seat and corner exhaust and the air ride seat is a must have if in the seat for in my case 10 to 12 hrs at a time
